Summary:
On Tuesday, October15,2013, Raymond Stevens was brought to court and was sentenced to jail on $8,000 bail for defacing three African refugee families in September 2011 as well as writing graffiti on a fourth house in the same south Concord neighborhood a year later. One of the families that were targeted in the incident left in fear but the other three were pleased with the arrest of Stevens. The case came to a big break after a detective looked through thousands of documents to match the handwriting on the homes to someone who had contact with the police. Detective Brown was looking in the documents for a lowercase "b" that was written like a number six. In September 2012, Detective Brown found an application filed by Stevens. Searches of Steven's home, car, parlor had more samples of the handwriting and on his Facebook page the police found racist cartoons that were " indicative of white supremacist ideology". Stevens is scheduled for court on October 24.
Reflection:
Racism still present in the twenty-first century, it's been with us throughout history. I believe we are all ignorant if we think that just because we are born here makes them American. None of our ancestors were born here, they were brought here either by force or by choice. So when Stevens said " the sub humans in this house are enjoying free rides", I was shocked and the first time I read it, I didn't understand. Instead of going forward in history we are going backwards.
Question :
If you met Raymond Steven, what would you tell him regards to his crime against the four African refugee families?
I agree with Ruben we need to move forward and realize that none of our ancestors were born here, they were brought here either by force or by choice. So if you want to be mad at somebody be made at yourself. We are so blinded by hate and racism.
ReplyDeleteI think that United States still has a lot of contradicting situations within the country. For this reason I see that we haven't really moved from this racist atmosphere except for the some of the physical signs of racism. We still have that mentality whether we see it or not. I would tell Stevens that it is not solely his fault because he has been exposed to this type of environment and was influenced by somebody else.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ruben. If I were face to face with Raymond, I wouldn't know what to say except for why? It's very difficult to try to understand how people think and process things. Though i would try to educate him about the families and explain to him things about social justice. I feel that knowledge is power and that it can have the power to change people.
