Summary:

Toni Jenkins, 19, is a nursing student working at a Red Lobster in Franklin, Tennessee. On September 7, 2013 she was waiting on a table of a couple who she said " was acting strange". Jenkins said that the couple was acting very rude and strange and that when they ordered they immediately asked for their food in to-go containers. When Toni came back to collect her check she received a forty five dollar check with no tip. Instead the check read " none N----r". Toni showed the check to her manager who insisted she had done nothing wrong. Jenkins then posted a picture on her Facebook page with the comment "This is what I got as a tip last night... so happy to live in the proud southern states. God Bless America, land of the free and home of the low class racists of tennessee". Some people have called the authenticity of the receipt into question, one man even accusing Toni "racist against white people". Matthew Hanson, founder of AddictingInfo.org saw the post and decided to raise money for Toni. In seventy two hours he was able to raise 10, 749 dollars for Toni. Toni has since been suspended on full pay until her superiors decide their next move.

Reflection:

As far as the check goes I am not that the surprised. I have no doubt that racism still excists everyday. One of the things that really stood out to me was the fact that people think that Toni is lying and just wants attention. I couldn't believe that a black man said that she was lying and that she is "racist against white people"! My question is what did Toni have to gain from this? She had no idea that people would donate money to her, as far as I'm concerned she just wanted to raise attention to the fact that racism is still a huge problem.

  1. I agree that people are still racist again certain people, but I wouldn't think a couple would do something like this. When I think of couple, I think of
two people that try to act respectful, not just to each other but to everyone else. I would try to be see as a good example to my girlfriend. This is such an immature act on their part. One of then should've told the other not to do that and be grateful that someone served them. This is one of the things that really anger me.

  3. This situation is disturbing to me, because i wouldn't expect racism to go to that extent in a public environment. Not even knowing Toni they just decided since she is a person of color they will treat her with disrespect. This is awful!
