Summary
In Sweden, there is a Bechdel test that has been introduced to give movies a rating. But in order to get a good rating they need to have "at least two named females characters who talk to each other about something other than a man." Some filmgoers have reacted to this test and it has affected then positively. They see this and try to use this to make their films better in this aspect of the movie. This rating is the Swedish attempt to put equality of gender in films. They want to change how the public sees women in movies because it gives a sort of perspective that they act exactly like that in real life. It is a belief that the roles of females in society are those that gossip, stay at home, or always involved for concerned about a man. This is what they want to change in the film industry.
Reflection
I think that is a very good attempt at depicting females roles. I don't like how movies make females out to be. Women don't gossip for a living or worry about men or things like that. They have a life and are trying to get a successful career just as men try. Personally, this rating is a way to basically put an end to certain stereotypes about women because I know if I was a female I wouldn't want people to think about me in such a way. Before this, people outside of the film industry weren't acknowledging this, and this can change the perspective people have. Society has this effect on how they look at male roles vs. female roles and the Bechdel test is altering this. I'm surprised that woman were not actively involved or trying to do something about this earlier.
After reading this I am a bit more pleased at the effort trying to be made to make more equality in the movie industry. Women don't just gossip or just stay at home, they can chase their dreams and ambitions as much as men can and can depict themselves as they choose. Therefore I'm really happy that this test is being put into effect to help with womens equality, now the question is if anyone follows
ReplyDeleteI think that this is an excellent start to defeating gender bias in the media. I think that this rating system would work well with all types of bias and the portrayal of stereotypes in not only movies but all of the media. Gender bias in definitely a problem and women are portrayed horribly in many forms of media, but I believe if we are going to fight against one type of oppression we have to fight against them all.
