Gender Bias Article
The article I read was about gender bias in cinema movies.  Movies in America get a rating normally based on how good they are, if there is sex, nudity, or violence. Now cinemas in Sweden are getting rating movies by highlighting gender bias. In the article it says “Now cinemas in Sweden are introducing a new rating to highlight gender bias, or rather the absence of it. To get an A rating, a movie must pass the so-called Bechdel test, which means it must have at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man”. This shows me that even movies have opened up the eyes of many people and these movies have made people realize that woman are still coming second to men. In movies you rarely see an action hero portrayed as a woman, or "a female professor or person who makes it through exciting challenges and masters them", but an A rating movies give the opportunity for a major woman influence in society. For a movie to get an A rating “a movie must pass the so-called Bechdel test, which means it must have at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man”. A rating movie’s empower woman an influence woman to do greater things than being just a “house wife”, and does not look down upon woman. This is a tremendous improvement on the way woman are seen and what they are capable of really doing.
Reflection = I am very happy Sweden has come up with this new rating, I feel like this new rating will pave the way in America and all over the world for woman. It will help empower woman and will give them a better outlook. This article also made me realize that women are looked down upon in movies because I rarely see a woman action hero in a movie. It’s amazing that after I read this article it made me realize that and I never notice that woman are rarely superheroes in movies.

  1. I agree with you that the Bechdel test is very good system as it does "empower" women just like you said. However I feel like the test is bias to females as males in movies are always shown as action heroes and fighters and not all men are like that. I would hope that in the future the Bechdel test helps males and females instead of just males.

  2. The Bechdel test is good to empower women, but I think there has to be test to give an equal amount of power to both genders.

  3. This was a very interesting find. I was struck by the comment that most well-known movies would not pass the test of simply having 2 women talk to each other about something other than a man. Very interesting.
