Sexist Speaker in Texas High School

http://nymag.com/thecut/2013/11/texas-hs-students-revolt-over-sexist-speaker.html

Summary:

On Wednesday November 13, Justin Lookadoo, a bible-based dating guru and a motivational speaker, gave a speech to a Dallas area public high school about dating. Many students walked out of the optional seminar when Lookadoo started saying sexist comments against women, like "date able girls know how to shut up" and "date able guys know how to cover women up". Many of the students took to twitter as a way of sharing their recent experience. They used the hash tag #LookaDouche.

Opinion:

I think that it's crazy that people like that are able to go and speak to students in school. I would have thought that the administration would have done some research on their speaker before clearing him to speak. This just shows the opinions of some people about women and their role in society and I think it is HORRIBLE that it is being taught to high school students.

  1. After reading this article I find it crazy as well that people like this are able to talk infront of students and influence them negatively. Especially since when your in high school that is when most kids start changing and soaking in many that they see, hear, and they begin to find themselves, influencing kids like this is definitely not helping these kids grow as individuals. I hope that the administration gets the full blame for this and I really Justin Lookadoo finds a new profession.

  2. This article is sicking. After reading this article it reminded me of the class discussion we had on misogyny last week. This negativity that this speaker brought to this Texas High School on woman is outrages. The speaker starts to downgrade woman and refers to them as "cats" and "dogs". This is a clear demonstrating of misogyny towards woman. Actions like this can influence other students to think the same way about woman, that is no good. I am also disappointed in the administration, why did they allow him to continue speaking and why did they not stop him? They should get the full blame on what went on. I hope Justin Lookadoo gets in trouble and apologizes to woman!

  3. Its complete and total insanity that some people even think like that. It reminds me of that clip on the little mermaid movie when Ursula took her voice and said something like men like it when women don't talk anyway, I guess it's just surprising that people do think that way.

  4. It's absurd how Lookadoo informed the kids about dateable rules. Also, by reading thru those tweets, I personally thought the last one was funny, because he didn't do anything useful except get people out of class.

  5. It's amazing to me how there was so much downgrade in this assembly that kids actually walked out because truthfully it's pretty hard to disappoint a teenager that much. Usually teens love assembly's because it gets them out of class but these kids were so disappointed that they walked out so I can imagine how bad this guy actually was.
